How to make a short macchiato

By , café venue manager and barista · Updated

A short macchiato, or short mac, is a single shot of espresso “marked” with a small dollop of milk foam. It is served in a small cup and tastes almost like a short black, with the edges softened.

The quick recipe

  • Espresso: a single shot, 9g in and 18g out
  • Shot time: 25 to 30 seconds
  • Foam: a small dollop, about a spoonful
  • Cup: a demitasse, about 90ml

The short macchiato calculator has the amounts and a shot timer.

Short mac or long mac?

  • Short mac: a single shot with a dollop of foam, in a small cup.
  • Long mac: a double shot with a dollop of foam, in a glass. See how to make a long macchiato.

Step by step

  1. Pull a single shot into a warm demitasse. See how to pull an espresso shot.
  2. Steam a little milk. You only need a small amount. Steam extra and use the rest for another drink.
  3. Add the foam. Spoon or pour a small dollop onto the middle of the crema.

How strong should it be?
